In Rajasthan, hand block printing on textiles using vibrant, natural colours has been a tradition for around 500 years. The Chhipa people brought block printing to Rajasthan’s Jaipur region. This neighbourhood was formerly part of Bagru Village, which is now well-known for its mud-resist (dabu) and vegetable-dye block prints. The craft of block printing has been passed down through families and communities for many generations, and in more recent years, it has spread to places like Sanganer, which is south of Jaipur. The “recipes” for the traditional plant-based dyes are created within each family and passed down from generation to generation in traditional Bagru style block printing.
